Reedley International School Invites all its parents to encourage their children who are now in high school to join and register themselves to the Council of International Schools’ Student Registry.

What is the Student Registry?

It is a program of the Council of International Schools (CIS) that caters to high school students of their members who would like to broaden their college opportunities abroad. Signing up for this gives the students the edge of learning updates and announcements on various college admissions, requirements, deadlines, and scholarships of different Universities all over the world. This also entails such Universities to give admissions and scholarship grants to those students who are qualified for their standards.

This registry is absolutely free to schools which are members of the Council of International Schools, like Reedley.

Interested students may complete a registration form by downloading this page and submitting it to Ms. Maan De Guzman on or before March 20, 2012. Students may click here: ECIS Student Registration Form (0) or may also register online thru CIS Student Registry.

Words are more powerful than you realize. They have the power to wound or heal, tear down or build up, or discourage and uplift. This year, the Upper School Department of English hosted its annual celebration of the power of words through “The Word,” an annual competition which includes contests in short story-writing, on-the-spot-essay writing, as well as a Scrabble tournament.

For several years now, this event has been showcasing home-grown writers of short stories and essays. Two years ago, another item was added to the line-up of competitions—the very popular word game Scrabble. This year’s Scrabble competition included finalists Jolita Gurango and Isabella Benabaye, of Upper School 3 Yale, Myk Kim and William Hein of Upper School 3 Princeton, and Lorenzo de Pala and Daniel Levy of Upper School 4 Duke. After a nerve-wracking game on a giant Scrabble board, last year’s champions, Myk and William, successfully defended their crown with 232 points. They were followed by Lorenzo and Daniel, also two of last year’s finalists, with 228 points, while Jolita and Isabella placed third with 101 points.

Let us reflect and exchange ideas with each other about the different approaches on how to deal with teen issues  and discuss the best ways possible to bring both parents and children closer. At the same time,we can learn strategies & tips to help our teens grow up to be resilient and clever adults.

Teenagers have noticeably turned a lot smarter, quicker, and more technologically adept in the past decade and it has certainly caught some, if not most of us, off guard. New issues have sprung, which few of us parents have experienced. Together let us look back to how we were raised and see whether it affects our own parenting styles today.

Featuring our guest speaker: Dr. Encarnacion is a Clinical Psychologist focusing on addressing the psychological needs of children and parents within the framework of the family system.   He is the President of PsychVisions, his own counseling practice at the Makati Medical Towers. He has been a Market Research Consultant from the early 90s to 2000s, having Philippine Survey and Research Center, Inc.-Research International (PSRC-RI),  Nestle Philippines and ACNielsen among his long list of clients.

He has obtained his PhD in  Clinical Psychology, Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology and his Bachelor’s Degree in B.S. Management Engineering as Cum Laude all from Ateneo De Manila University and has since been a frequent speaker for various talks and conferences such as “Equipping Your Child for Academic Excellence, “Understanding and Coping with Learning and Emotional Disorders in the Family”,  and “Active Parenting “ to name a few.

Jomarie Victoria Em and Matthew Stephen Drueco, Reedley’s Team Synapse, won 4th Place in the 2012 Science Communication Effectiveness Competition (SciComm) organized by the School of Sciences and Engineering of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) held last February 11, 2012.  SciComm is a two-day competition for graduating high school students. The competition aimed to encourage students to develop their scientific research and communication skills.

There were 45 teams from 19 schools that competed during the elimination round held on January 28, 2012. Each team was composed of two students who delivered an oral presentation of a scientific paper of their choice. They were given 10 minutes to present and 2 minutes to answer questions from the Board of Judges. After the elimination round, 12 teams made it to the final round.

In the final round, the scientific papers were chosen by the SciComm Board and were assigned randomly right after the announcement of the finalists. Each finalist was given 15 minutes to discuss and choose the paper for the final round.

During the final round, Vicky and Matthew  beat the contestants from the following schools : Philippine Science HS, Miriam College HS, Paranaque Science HS, Grace Christian HS, 2 teams of Ateneo De Manila HS, 2 teams of Southridge. Vicky and Matthew were able to answer the questions of the Board of Judges. The Board of Judges included: a U.P. Diliman professor – expert in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology; a U.P. Los Banos professor – expert in Developmental Communication; a De La Salle Professor of Biology; and a Communications Graduate of UA&P who is an entrepreneur running two famous restaurants.

The judges commended Vicky’s and Matthew’s prowess in rhetorical ability and confidence in presenting a high academic level research paper given limited time for preparation. The two students were guided by their content coach; Ms. Ningning Encarnado of the Upper School Science department, and their speech coach; Mr. Earle Figuracion of the Upper School English department.

The International School Assessment (ISA) is a standardized test taken by thousands of international school students annually. Every year, Reedley participates in the tests, not only to benchmark our students against other international school students but also to ensure that we have the right curriculum interventions to help your child succeed.

This year, Upper School 3 will be representing Reedley in the ISA on February 6 & 7, 2012.

As this event is very important to us, there will be no classes for the rest of the grade levels on these dates to ensure that the Upper School 3 Students who will be taking the test have a quiet and conducive assessment atmosphere.

Upper School 3 students will have to report to school at 7:40 am and will be dismissed at 11:15 am on both dates.

As such, we wish to request that your offices make the necessary adjustments to ensure the success of this event. In particular, we wish to request that the Administration Office inform the canteen that students are not allowed to leave the testing area and as such, there will be no students availing of canteen services on that day.
