Bullying is never acceptable. The best way to respond to bullying is to stop it from happening.

This year’s Grade School Anti-Bullying Campaign is called BULLY-PROOF: Be Nice, Be Kind, Assert Your Rights. It says Be Nice because Bully-Proof students know how to listen to bullying victims. Whenever they see a classmate being bullied, they help him cope with the situation, but NEVER, ever, tell him to retaliate. This year’s campaign says Be Kind because bully-proof kids respect people. They celebrate diversity. They understand that we all have differences and never to bully your classmate just because he or she is different. This year’s campaign says Assert You Rights because bully-proof students are smart — they speak and standout. They walk away from the bully and they tell a teacher about the bullying.

During the Anti-Bullying Campaign Launch, all Grade School students were given pins as a symbol that Reedley students are Bully-Proof. They made a pledge, proudly raising their right hands as they vowed to stay Bully-Proof all throughout the year. Strongly believing these students will stay true to their commitment, we, the teachers, are hopeful that students in other schools will be bully-proof as well.

Be nice. Be kind. Assert your rights!

Kindergarten Global Day: Celebrating Each Child Around the Globe

The buzz began late in July when Kindergarteners started greeting each other and their teachers “Konichiwa!”, “Buon Giorno” or “Guten Tag”. This was when they started learning about people and communities around the globe. Anchored in their learning unit about Communities, the Kindergarteners started trailblazing towards the culminating event – Kindergarten Global Day.

Kindergarten Global Day happened last August on a beautiful Friday morning. Parents and guests started pouring in the Lee Kuan Yew Hall to see the kids perform dances from different parts of the globe. Before the program started, they were regaled by the colourful and information-laden Multi-cultural Doll Exhibit.

The Multi-cultural Doll has been a month-long family project. The children drew lots as to which country they will represent. They took home a packet with a doll template and a little booklet to be filled out. The participation of the Kindergarten families has been extraordinary. Dolls representing every child around the globe were brought to school along with amazing stories from the children themselves. Pride in their workmanship and effort can be seen in every child’s face as well as their family members. Talking about their dolls at the classroom “Show-and-Share” activity came out naturally and easily. During the program, every Kindergartener stood in front of the big audience to introduce the project with confidence.

The program has been charged with excitement. It started out with the Global Wonders’ Hello Song from all the Kindergarteners which left their audience amazed with how they learned greetings in different languages. Alessandro Infante of K2-Kiwi and Adrianna Gearing of K2-Elm introduced the Kindergarten Global Day to everyone. They explained that it was a celebration for every child around the globe. They talked about how every child is different but beautiful just the same and that they are special in every way. They also wished to belong to a community where everyone is included. Just as the Reedley’s ESLR’s would like them to be At Heart, In Mind and In Spirit.

Then came the dance presentations. The bubbliest and youngest Reesians, Kinder 1 Melon danced to the Waka Waka, official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It was chosen by the K1 class adviser, Ms. Kate Capistrano because of its message about having all cultures in one melting pot. Kinder 2 Kiwi presented a very cute and colourful dance representing the islands of Hawaii. Inspired by the sea, pineapples and the Lilo and Stitch music, the children picked the dance with the help of their teacher, Ms. Jana Tungpalan. K2 – Elm was all energy when they came up with the Mexican Hat Dance with their hats and their boots. The class, being natural dancers, picked out their number with their teacher, Ms. Hazel Argel.

The most appealing part of the event for both kids and parents was the participation of a Reedley parent, Mr. Paolo Aguzzi. He shared to the kids highlights of his growing years in Italy. He showed pictures of places in Italy, the creator of Ferrari, his motorcycle and his favorite childhood story, Pinnochio.

According to Mrs. Payawal, mother of Hannah from K1 – Melon, they were very entertained by the Kindergarteners’ dances and beautiful display of multi-cultural dolls. For her, what mattered most was that her daughter had fun from the dance practices to the doll decorations until the actual presentation. She also said that she really enjoyed studying the country assigned to Hannah and preparing the costume of her little one.

The Kindergarten Global Day was indeed a celebration for each child. Belonging to an accepting and supportive community is a gift that every child should enjoy. With this, the Reedley Kindergartener is ready to strive to make the school a better place to study at and the world a better place to live in, one little Reesian step at a time.
