Seniors’ Review Program By: Lady May Martinez

Sure, exams are about solving word problems in Math, answering Reading Comprehension questions, and balancing chemical equations.

But do you know that it’s also about wearing the right kind of shoes on the exam day? Or knowing how test-makers construct multiple choice questions? These were just some of the highlights of the “37 Tips To Pass The UPCAT the Sure Way,” a workshop held in the Reedley Upper School library last July 29, 2009.

More than 70,000 students take the University of the Philippines College Application Test (UPCAT) every year.  This workshop aims to give Reedley students an edge over all these other hopefuls by sharing strategies gleaned from several years’ worth of insider knowledge on the UPCAT.

The team that conducted the workshop included  Prof. Violeta Quintana a former member of the UP Testing Committee, Prof. Leopoldo B. Laset Jr. UP Professor and Champion Coach of the Philippine Math Olympiad, and Engr. Neb L. Perez, UP Professor, member of MENSA-Philippines and champion coach of the Philippine Physics Olympiad.

The workshop was the highlight of the Seniors’ Review Program (SRP) last July 28 to 31, 2009. Students answered simulated tests in Math, Science, English, and Filipino. Facilitating these reviews were US 4 teachers, with the special participation of Mr. Robert Picken from Cambridge University, who handled the Math modules.

The week of August 10 to 22 meanwhile, was devoted to test simulations for other entrance exams the students would be taking such as the ACET and the DLSU exam. Instead of Filipino,  General Information and Abstract Reasoning, and Essay Writing under time pressure were included in the modules.
